119.000 foreign passengers departed from Keflavíkurflugvöllur (Keflavík Airport) in January, 2% fewer than last year. Excluding the years 2020 to 2022, when the coronavirus pandemic was under way, one has to look back to January 2016 to find a lower figure; then they numbered just 78.000. Conversely, 2018 was a record year, when just under 148.000 foreign passengers departed the country.Departures from Iceland of various nationalities indicate those who have visited, and from where they came.The largest decrease in the latest figures was among Americans. 24.000 Americans departed the country in January, corresponding to just over a fifth of all departures. Last year they numbered 33.000.Britons, however, somewhat offset the decline. 21.000 Britons left the country, an increase of 12% compared with January last year. In third place by nationality were Chinese passengers. They numbered 9.000, a decrease of 8% from the same month last year.Fewer Icelanders travelled abroad in January than last year, totalling 43.000.In total, traffic through Keflavíkurflugvöllur (Keflavík Airport) decreased by 5.5% in January, according to figures from Isavia, amounting to just over 443.000 passengers. The busiest day was 4 January, when 20.300 passengers passed through the airport. Sixteen airlines flew direct from Keflavík to 56 destinations. The most frequent destinations were London, Copenhagen, Manchester, New York and Paris.
