Pakistan seeks to host US-Iran talks, Trump predicts deal could be ‘soon’
Pakistan seeks to host US-Iran talks, Trump predicts deal could be ‘soon’ “Pakistan will be honoured to host and facilitate meaningful talks between the two sides in coming days, for a comprehensive and lasting settlement of the ongoing conflict,” said FM Ishaq Dar . Monday 30/03/2026 Foreign Ministers Badr Abdelatty of Egypt, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, Ishaq Dar of Pakistan and Hakan Fidan of Turkey meet to discuss regional de-escalation, amid the US-Israel conflict with Iran, in Islamabad, Pakistan, March 29, 2 ISLAMABAD Pakistan said on Sunday that it was ready to broker and host “meaningful talks” between the United States and Iran while President Donald Trump predicted a deal to bring an end to the war could be reached “soon” despite the US sending more troops to the region. Speaking after talks in Pakistan with visiting regional foreign ministers, Badr Abdelatty from Egypt, Hakan Fidan from Turkey and Saudi Arabia’s Faisal bin Farhan, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said the discussions had covered possible ways to bring an early and permanent end to the war in the region as well as potential US-Iran talks in Islamabad. “Pakistan will be honoured to host and facilitate meaningful talks between the two sides in coming days, for a comprehensive and lasting settlement of the ongoing conflict,” he said. Regional discussions hosted by Pakistan focused on proposals to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping, sources familiar with the matter said. The countries meeting in Pakistan have floated proposals to Washington tied to maritime traffic in the Gulf, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters, as part of wider efforts to stabilise shipping flows. The Strait of Hormuz was previously a conduit for about a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies, but Iran has effectively halted shipping flows through it in response to the US and Israeli air strikes that began a month ago. Pakistan, which like Turkey borders Iran, has leveraged its close ties to both Tehran and Washington to emerge as a key diplomatic channel in the conflict, while Ankara, Cairo and Riyadh have also played a role. A source from Pakistan said proposals, including from Egypt, had been forwarded to the White House before Sunday’s meeting and that they included Suez Canal-style fee structures. Other Pakistani sources said Turkey, Egypt and Saudi Arabia could form a consortium to manage oil flows through the waterway, and had asked Pakistan to participate. A Pakistani source said Islamabad had not been formally asked to join and maintains that it will not. “Regime change” The proposal for a management consortium had been discussed with the US and Iran, the sources said. A Pakistani source said the country’s army chief Asim Munir had been in regular contact with US Vice President JD Vance. A Turkish diplomatic source said Ankara’s priority was securing a ceasefire. “Ensuring the safe passage of ships could serve as an important confidence-building measure in this regard,” the source said, requesting anonymity. The US State Department and the White House did not immediately comment on potential talks in Pakistan. As the conflict entered its second month, fighting showed no sign of relenting. Complicating Pakistan’s bid are the maximalist positions set out by the United States, Israel and Iran on what it would take to end the conflict. But asked whether there could be a deal with Iran this coming week, Trump said: “I do see a deal in Iran. Could be soon.” The US president, citing the number of Iranian leaders who have been killed in the month-long US-Israeli war against Iran, said “regime change” has already been achieved and the new leadership is “much more reasonable”. In the meanwhile, Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf earlier accused the US of sending messages about possible negotiations while at the same time planning to send in troops. Washington has dispatched thousands of Marines to the Middle East, with the first of two contingents arriving on Friday aboard an amphibious assault ship, the American military has said. The Washington Post quoted US officials as saying the Pentagon was preparing for weeks of ground operations in Iran, adding that it was not yet clear if President Trump would approve such plans. Reuters has reported that the Pentagon has considered military options that could include ground forces. Trump faces a stark choice between seeking a negotiated exit or a military escalation that risks a protracted crisis that would likely weigh further on his already low approval ratings. Pakistan is seeking to capitalise on its long-standing links with Tehran and close contacts in the Gulf, as well as the personal rapport that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the country’s powerful army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, have struck up with the US president. Dar and Sharif have held several calls with senior government ministers in Iran, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and were “actively engaged” with the US administration, the foreign minister said. Dar said he has also spoken to his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. They “fully support” Pakistan’s push for peace, as do other governments around the world, he added. Tehran has refused to admit to holding official talks with Washington but has passed a response to Trump’s 15-point plan to end the war via Islamabad, Iran’s Tasnim news agency has reported. Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Friday he expected a direct US-Iran meeting in Pakistan “very soon”. But Shuja Nawaz, founder director of the South Asia Centre at the Atlantic Council, said Pakistan had taken on a “challenging task” in trying to get Washington and Tehran to the table. “It could only do this with Saudi blessing,” Nawaz, author of “The Battle for Pakistan: The Bitter US Friendship and a Tough Neighbourhood”, told AFP. “The real challenge for Pakistan is to bring together a single person in the White House who changes his mind frequently and an Iranian government that is debating whether to fight a long war or find an end to its economy being further devastated. “Israeli autonomous decision-making will further complicate any Trump decision to claim victory and end a conflict that is hurting his popularity at home. Pakistan has limited leverage over both the US and Iran; none with Israel. “Will it remain an event planner only?” Pakistan’s efforts make economic sense: it relies on oil and gas imports through the Strait of Hormuz. Continued disruption to shipping could worsen fuel supplies, driving up prices and forcing further austerity measures. Dar said late on Saturday that Iran had allowed 20 more Pakistani-flagged vessels, or two ships daily, to pass through the Strait.
